Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey ist qualitativ ganz weit vorn im Bereich der Action-Rollenspiele.

Nach über 60 Stunden im Spiel macht es aber weiterhin Spaß, die letzten Ecken der Antike zu erkunden. Das Grundgerüst wurde weiter verfeinert, wenn auch mit ein bisschen zuviel “drumherum” Versehen. Wem Assassin’s Creed: Origins schon gefallen hat, kann bei der Standard Version bedenkenlos zugreifen. Ein einzelner Wermutstropfen bleibt am Ende jedoch noch über: Der großartige, geschichtliche “Touristen”-Modus wird erst in den kommenden Monaten nachgeliefert und ist nicht schon vom Start mit dabei.

While its large-scale campaign--clocking in at over 50 hours--can occasionally be tiresome, and some features don't quite make the impact they should, Odyssey makes great strides in its massive and dynamic world, and it's a joy to venture out and leave your mark on its ever-changing setting.

Alexios is one of the most memorable protagonists in all of Assassin's Creed, even if I never once actually thought of him as an assassin. In a lesser game, he'd probably be forgettable. But Assassin's Creed Odyssey is superb in nearly every aspect. It's the most impressive Assassin's Creed, even though sometimes it feels like it's Assassin's Creed in name only. It's as broad as Atlas' shoulders and as strong as Hercules. This time, Ubisoft hit a real Homer.

The story is compelling, both as a hero’s journey and in the way it ties into the series’ wider lore. Exploring the world is fun, combat is empowering, and getting epic loot is a thrill. That solid core formula carries Odyssey a long way, but like Icarus and his wax wings, it’s not enough to reach the bright star on the horizon.

I was really torn in assessing Assassin's Creed Origins, as it hits several of the same lows as the rest of the series, with its sometimes uneven mission structure and janky physics. But given that they now have the formula down to a science and didn't rush it out the door, all of that is a little easier to deal with than its predecessors.
