After the recently published AMD Ryzen 5 7600X review, we take a look at the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processor on OCinside.de today. We are curious to see how the power of 16 cores and 32 threads compares to the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X and how well the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X can be overclocked. We also show an interesting AMD Ryzen thermal image video in the OCinside YouTube Channel.
AMD has yet another winner in its hands with the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D which takes the crown away from Intel in the gaming domain. AMD still has a lot of roads to cover and it's not yet a clean sweep for Team Red but with each new release, AMD is encroaching into territories where Intel has been untouchable. Coming to the question - Whether you should get the 7950X or the 7950X3D? Well, if your usage is going to be gaming-heavy, then go for the 7950X3D. The 7950X still has a place thanks to its higher thermal headroom but as these processors get more efficient, we should see 3D V-Cache becoming more commonplace. For INR 60,599, the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D is a great buy.
Geht da noch was?
When AMD released its first 3D V-Cache SKU with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, it proved that giving games a lot more cache could greatly benefit performance. That’s especially the case at 1080p, but sometimes 1440p, too. It was clear that the 5800X3D wouldn’t be the last 3D V-Cache SKU we saw, but we’re not sure how many would have anticipated three such models being made available this generation.
It's not often we have to revise our system and thus retest a bunch of things, and we're glad it's not super often. We do, however, strongly feel that it's for the best. We never understand these reviews that just compare one item against maybe two or three. What use is that? It's like comparing every restaurant to your local one. A very niche audience. We understand that even with our many tests we're going to be missing a few of your favourites, but eventually we have to draw a line in the sand and we thought the Ryzen 3000 series and Intel 12th Gen were good stopping points. Older than that and almost anything will be an upgrade.
The Ryzen 9 7950X3D and the Ryzen 9 7950X have some minor differences, but there is a way to further narrow down any potential gains from the 3D V-Cache tech: The 7950X3D has two chiplets, one with 3D V-Cache and a 'bare' chiplet without the 3D-stacked cache. We disabled one chiplet for each of these series of tests, therefore either running the games on only the 3D V-Cache chiplet or on the bare chiplet.
The new Ryzen 9 7950X3D is a 16-core / 32-thread processor that offers the multi-threaded performance benefits of the 7950X, with optimized gaming performance, thanks to an additional 64MB of 3D-Vcache.
The 7950X3D ships in a box that has a similar fashion as the 7950X and it doesn’t come with a stock CPU cooler. While the box is very similar to the 7950X, the design on the 7950X3D box emphasizes the 3D V-Cache, which is the core feature of the Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs. As for the CPU itself, the 7950X3D comes with an asymmetric chiplet design that features a standard CCX and a CCX with AMD 3D V-Cache. According to AMD, the mixed design enables games and applications to utilize the CCX that it can take advantage of to perform better, which offers much more flexible usability as compared to a dual 3D V-Cache configuration.
AMDs 7000 Series CPU launches brought along with it the new AM5 socket which now uses an LGA socket style as well as DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 as well. For CPUs they have a variety of options and their performance has been impressive. The one exception to that is looking at gaming performance when compared to AMDs own Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU which was the first desktop processor to have a stacked 3D L3 cache. This was a late addition to the 5000 series of CPUs and offered staggering performance in cache-limited situations, especially gaming. Well for the 7000 series they have announced three 3D CPUs, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X3D. The two Ryzen 9 CPUs are launching tomorrow February 28th and they did send over the 7950X3D for testing so today I’m going to see how it performs.
olid gains across the board, plus some bonkers results.
AMD today launched its flagship desktop processor, the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, enhanced with the phenomenal 3D Vertical Cache technology that worked like magic on 5800X3D, providing a generational gaming performance uplift. You can read all about the 7950X3D "Zen 4" processor in our main review. AMD did something interesting with the way it released 3D Vertical Cache to the market this time around—the company launches the 16-core 7950X3D and 12-core 7900X3D now, which go on sale from tomorrow, February 28, while the 8-core 7800X3D joins the lineup on April 8.
Ultimately, AMD offers a mighty processor with the Ryzen 9 7950X3D. It provides excellent overall performance thanks to 16 performance cores. In single threads, it's pretty fast, in muti-thread very fast. The added L3 cache now brings in an advantage for enthusiast PC gamers as well, allowing ZEN4 to reach Raptor Lake performance numbers in gaming. That said, it's not a clear win, though, but definitely 'enough'. AMD's challenge remains to be pricing. We're not saying the 7950X3D isn't worth $699; we're just saying it's an awful amount of money for a gaming processor. Ergo, we feel that the 7900X3D but, most of all, the 7800X3D at $449 is going to be the most interesting SKU to consider. Of course, you'll need to add the cost of ownership of the AM5 platform. PCIe Gen 5 is now available. However, it serves no function now because no graphics card requires PCIe Gen 5. We also anticipated that AMD would have seeded some Gen5-ready NVMe SSD samples. However, these units seem to run how enough to fry an egg on (when not actively cooled). So now, we'll continue to advise you to purchase a B650 motherboard instead of an X670(E). That choice will save you money. Is the Ryzen 9 7950X the processor to get? We still have a hard time pleading that. Yes, the increased L3 brings excellent performance numbers matching Intel in most cases. However, we frown upon the newly introduced software dependency for core preferences. But as gaming processors go, this probably won't get any better this year, and if I had to choose between the 7950X and 7950X3D, it definitely be the latter one.
The Ryzen 9 7950X3D review is here, AMD is ready to take on Intel's mighty Raptor Lake. Bringing the latest upgrades to the Ryzen 7000 "Zen 4" family, this processor rocks 3D Vertical Cache technology along with a massive 16-core/32-thread count, and its makers claim that it levels up to the Core i9-13900K both in gaming and multi-threaded productivity, making it the most powerful desktop processor you can buy from the AMD camp. The best part? It's being launched at the same $700 MSRP as the standard 7950X, which is now $50-75 cheaper in the market; and remains drop-in compatible with Socket AM5 motherboards, although using the latest BIOS and drivers is required.
